How To Be An Awesome Manager
The reason why some teams outperform others in a similar environment and given the same tools and resources often comes down to the quality of leadership. Go from OK to awesome on the manager-quality scale with these seven strategies.
Learn how to speak less and listen more.
Projects have a lot of moving parts, from the team members to the files necessary for each milestone. Businesses using email communication run the risk of losing essential project assets, spending time searching for critical communication, and failing to have the most up-to-date file versions. Bringing all resources together for project messages, documents and other information cuts down on unproductive time and miscommunication.
Be inspired and inspiring.
Have you ever tried to sell a product you didn’t believe in or understand? As a manger, it’s your duty to inspire and educate the people you’re responsible for, and the only way you can do this is to be inspired yourself. Take time to explore your interests and develop your skills – inside and outside your business – and remember that positive energy is contagious. Make sure you’re well caffeinated before addressing your employees and don’t forget to smile.
Learn how to communicate effectively.
Effective communication is all about getting your message across in a way others can understand, appreciate and act upon. Awesome managers communicate clearly, concisely and quickly. If your team starts to nod off during your presentation, figure out where you can make cuts for time or punch up the enthusiasm.
Focus on time management.
Time is money. If you are able to discuss an issue and allocate tasks in an hour, why call a meeting that lasts the whole morning? Learn how to use email, social media, conference calls and CRM tools effectively. Awesome managers lead by example, set realistic time frames and never have a meeting to prepare for another meeting.
Learn how to prioritize.
If your house was burning down, would you be in front of the closet mirror picking an outfit to run out of the house in? Focus on the big problems first, and table anything that can wait. Awesome managers focus on key issues and teach others how to prioritize effectively.
Perfect the ability to calm.
When things go wrong, awesome managers restore the peace. People make mistakes under stress, and it’s easy for one small problem to snowball into complete chaos. Great leaders deal with a crisis situation by assessing the problem, modeling calm, rational behavior and taking action.
Discipline fairly and consistently.
Favoritism will result in resentment now and failure in the long run. When team members overstep the boundaries, discipline dispensed with fairness solidifies the trust and respect in the entire team.
